Welcome to our Creator spotlight!

Continuing our series of Space Engineers Creator Spotlights with Foltast.

“Hi, everyone – it’s Foltast here and most likely you know me as the creator of Outer Planets Consolidation. My long journey (10 years now!) into Space Engineers started back in 2014, when a few of my buddies suggested we try a new game where you could build and destroy each other’s structures. So we spent our free evenings inventing weird ships, discussing how we could make them even more incredible, and waiting for the next weekly game update (on Thursday, remember, right?), which was sure to add something interesting that we would immediately find a use for.

In 2017-2019, my play style changed a lot. I became more interested in survival and building ships and rovers that would help me with that. At the same time, I started coming up with small storylines for co-op playthroughs – kind of like DnD sessions, only with Clang and voxels. At some point I thought that it would be nice to make a faction, which would consist of characters of me and my friends. For the faction name I took the place where we used to live (we always played Star System and settled in the Alien planet area), and to play with that I created a small plot in which pirate attacks led to the consolidation of miners, among which were our characters.

By posting blueprints, mods and videos, I am primarily telling the story of Outer Planets Consolidation formation, its smooth transition from a cluster of scattered mining companies and individuals to a full-fledged interstellar empire. First of all, this is reflected in the design philosophy of OPC ships – the first ships being simple, not very well thought out both externally and internally, demonstrate the inexperience and lack of resources of OPC engineers. But with each subsequent ship or rover, as the lore progresses, OPC gains more and more experience and resources, and with them changes its approach to design: ships become more and more detailed, interiors are comfortable and more time is given to aesthetics. I also try to reflect this in the names of the warships – from the manifesting Valiant and Justicar, we’re smoothly transitioning to the menacing Coercer and Daunter.

Nor could this story be told without the lore pieces on the blueprint and mod pages. Names, locations and events all intertwine and wrap around each creation, forming one storyline that spans several decades in the OPC world and will hopefully span the next 10,000 years 😉

Some of the important features of Space Engineers for me were the openness to mods and the great modding community. Without that, Dercaixr (OPC co-creator and my best friend!) and I probably wouldn’t have decided to release our first mod – Consolidation Armament – which was a milestone in the universe development and changed our own perception of OPC a lot.

And as a modder and creator, there is nothing more satisfying for me than to see other players using my creations, using them as a base on which they invent something of their own, satisfying their Need To Create™. But the greatest pleasure for me is probably the inclusion of the OPC universe in the worlds that community servers build. It all motivates me to keep developing the world of Consolidation – to fill it with new places, characters, and hopefully new stories in the future.”
