Continuing our series of Space Engineers Creator Spotlights with Lord Vassious.

“Lord Vassious here (aka Lord V). I’ve been playing Space Engineers since 2013/2014. In SE, my motto is: “The engineer does not always know what to create, but he has always known that he must.” That’s always been true for me. Since childhood, I’ve been drawn to building things – before I even knew what engineering was. From creating Lego plumbing systems to staring at circuit boards that seemed to look like cities, I was fascinated by how systems worked. Now, I get to express that same drive in SE.
My first public creation was an Automated Rover Movement System (ARMS), but that wasn’t enough. I’d long dreamt of piloting a mech in SE with my own body. With some C# coaching from my wife – and an obsession to see it through – I made it real. Using an Azure Kinect to track my body and interfacing it with SE, I became the mech. Later, I transitioned to VR, dropping full-body tracking but allowing for finger tracking. That journey introduced me to many new friends, and with the help of my great testers and moderators, I now have a humble following, which fuels me to continue.
Today, I try to keep pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in SE. Whether it’s machine learning to control a mech, turning a webcam feed into a 2.5D hologram, or showcasing acrobatic mech movement in my recent Mechnology series – including a mech-ridable ATV for stunts – I’m always looking for new frontiers to explore. I have many ideas and sometimes I jump around projects without finishing them, but I love it.
My friends and I have joked about what game we’d want to be trapped in if we had to be and for me, the answer is always Space Engineers. Thank you, Keen, for creating such an incredible sandbox. I hope to keep meeting new friends and building new things. In the spirit of creativity, exploration and ambition, I’ll end with this quote.”
