Survival Guide: Radiation

Radiation exposure can be very dangerous. In this guide we’ll go through the different sources of radiation, and how to protect your character from this deadly hazard.

Solar Radiation

Solar Radiation comes directly from sun exposure. If you are in direct sunlight your radiation exposure level will increase. You can configure how strong this source is in your world by adjusting the Solar Radiation drop down in your world settings.

  • Disabled: This source will not impact the player.
  • Light 0.5x Exposure
  • Medium: 1x Exposure
  • Heavy: 2x Exposure

Note: By default Solar Radiation is disabled in all worlds unless changed in the world settings.

To protect yourself from solar radiation seek shade and shelter. This source is at its most powerful in space, while some planetary atmospheres can provide protection.

  • Earth-Like, the Alien Planet, and Triton provide full protection.
  • Mars, Pertam, and Titan provide some protection, but not enough to prevent exposure.
  • The Moon and Europa offer no protection at all.

Radiation from Weather Events

Some storms may increase radiation. These dangerous types of weather can roll in quickly and with very little warning. Keeping an LCD with weather information accessible can be critical to serve as an early warning system, allowing you to seek shelter immediately.

To protect yourself from weather based radiation, find a sealed and pressurized room or cockpit. Hunker down and wait for the storm to pass.

Block Based Radiation

Nuclear Reactor blocks emit radiation when damaged. The closer you are to the damaged reactor, the higher your exposure level will climb. The bigger the reactor, the larger the contaminated area and the higher the exposure will be.

This type of radiation is one of the most dangerous, capable of penetrating grids and sealed environments. The only way to eliminate the exposure is to remove the source, either by grinding down or repairing the leaking reactor.

Planetary Radiation

In some cases, an entire planet may be radioactive. Europa is one such case, emitting high levels of radiation from its core. At gravity’s edge, you’ll receive only a light amount of radiation – but the surface can be deadly.

A pressurized ship or base can shield you from the effects of this radiation.

Anti-Radiation Medkit

The Anti-Radiation Medkit is a special consumable that can be looted from NPCs. When consumed this item will grant you 10 minutes of immunity to all types of radiation, as well as quickly reduce any radiation you’ve already accumulated. In dangerous situations, it can be a life saver.
